ハロウィーンと聖なる火
昔から、世界中で「火」には不思議な力があり、それを「魔除け」や「お払い」に使う習慣があります。
日本でも神社や御寺の大きな祭事には、大きな焚き火や松明を使う習慣が今も残されています。
そんな「火」に関する逸話は「ハロウィーン」にもあります。
かつて「ハロウィーン」の夜は、人を別世界へ連れていこうとする「悪霊」や「精霊」が現れる信じられており、人々はそんな「悪霊」や「精霊」から身を守るために、夜が明けるまで暖炉や松明などに「火」を灯していました。
今は「悪霊」や「精霊」を信じる人も減り、電気も普及しているので、夜通しで「ハロウィーン」の夜に明かりを必要とする事は少なくなりました。
しかし、今でも残っている海外の「火」に関する行事の中には「ハロウィーン」が関係している物もあるのです。
ここでは、そんな「魔除け」から生まれた「ハロウィーン」と「聖なる火」に関する話を紹介したいと思います。
Halloween and Holy Fire
There has been the mysterious power in fire over the world through the ages and the custom to use it as talisman and exorcism.
Even now there has been the custom to use a large bonfire and torches in the big festivals at shrines and temples in Japan.
Anecdotes about fire can be found also in Halloween.
It used to be believed that evil spirits and spirits who take people to another world appeared on the night of Halloween, therefore people had lit a fire at the fireplace or torches until morning in order to protect themselves from such evil spirits and spirits.
