炎と魔除け
「火」は古今東西、どの宗教、民族、地方にとっても神秘的かつ、最も身近なもの存在です。
闇を照らし、温もりを与えて、時に文明を発展させる手助けもしてくれます。
そんな「火」は「ハロウィーン」においても重要な役割がありました。
特に今でも民話や神話が多く残っている国では「ハロウィーン」の夜は先祖の霊だけでなく、「悪魔」・「魔女」・「幽霊」・「黒猫」などに化けた死者が地上に現れて大騒ぎをして、畑や作物を荒らしたり、人を異世界へさうなど意地の悪い危害を加えると信じられていました。
そんな死者から身を守り、帰ってきた先祖の霊を家へ導くために魔除けの力が込められた「聖なる火」が必要でした。
その「聖なる火」を得るために、人々は「ハロウィーン」の夜に丘の頂上で火をたき、その火で持ってきた松明（たいまつ）に移して丘を下ったり、朝になるまで火を燃やし続けたりしました。
そうしないと、現世に現れた死者に異世界へ引きずり込まれたり、原因不明の病になると本気で信じられていたのです。
しかし、時代が経つにつれて焚き火が規制されてしまったり、習慣自体が忘れられたりして、焚き火の代わりにろうそくを用いるようになりました。
または「楡（にれ）」・「榛（はしばみ）」・「柊（ひいらぎ）」などの植物も古くから「悪魔を追い払う」として護符に用いられていました。

Fire and Amulet
Fire is mysterious and most familiar for people in all religions, ethnics, and regions in all times and places.

Such a fire has an important role in Halloween.
Especially, it has been believed in countries where folklore and myths remain even now that not only the spirits of ancestors but also the dead disguised themselves as devils, witches, ghosts, and black cats appeared on the ground to harm people, damaging fields and crops and taking people to another world on the night of Halloween.
In order to protect themselves from such the dead, a holy fire with the power of amulet was required to guide the spirits of the ancestors to their houses.
In order to obtain the holy fire, people burned the fire at the top of the hill on the night of Halloween, transferred that fire to a torch and walked down the hill, or continued to burn the fire until the morning.
Otherwise, it had been believed seriously that the dead that appeared in this world and dragged people to another world, or people took ill due to the unidentified cause.
However, as time has passed, a bonfire has been regulated or the habit itself has been forgotten, and now candles are used instead of a bonfire.
Or even plants such as an elm, a hazel, and a holly had been used as amulets to exorcise the demons from ancient times.
