ハロウィーンの由来
「ハロウィーン」は、英語で「Halloween」と書きます。
正式には「All Hallows’Even」を短くした呼び方とされていて、英語で「Hallow（ハロウ）」は「聖人」や「聖職者」をという意味があります。
つまり、この「All Hallows’Even」を訳すと「諸聖人の前夜」となります。
この習慣は、アイルランドやケルトの習慣ではキリスト教が普及す前から精霊を祭る夜のを「ハロウ・イブ（Hallow Eve）」と呼んでいました。
それが十九世紀の移民によって、アメリカ合衆国に持ち込まれた習慣「ハロウ・イブ」がなまって「ハロウィン（Halloween）」になったのです。
「諸聖人の日」は「オール・ハロウズ（All Hallows）」、「ハロウマス（Hallowmas）」とも表記されます。
この「ハロウィーン」の元に精霊を祭る夜は「サムハイン祭」と呼ばれる行事で、必ず十月三十一日に行われていました。
そこにキリスト教が普及して「サムハイン祭」がキリスト教の「諸聖人の日」である十一月一日の前日に行われる事から「Halloween（ハロウィーン）」は十月三十一日の祭として人々の間に広まっていきました。
今は仮装をしてパーティやイベントを行う事が「ハロウィーン」の目的になっていますが、これはヨーロッパの人々がアメリカ大陸に渡って変化した「ハロウィーン」が逆輸入の形で、ヨーロッパだけでなく世界中に広まったためと考えられています。
この様に何気なく受け入れている行事の名前や意味を知っていると面白さが増したように感じますね。

The Origin of Halloween
Halloween is officially written as All Hallows’Even in English and regarded as a shortened form of this. Hallow in English may imdicatet a saint or a clergyman.
In other words, All Hallows'Even is translated as the eve of the Saints.
The night to enshrine the spirits before the spread of Christianity in this custom in Ireland and Celt is called Hallow Eve.
Due to the immigration of 19th century, the habit, "Harrow's Eve," which was brought to the United States became corrupted to the "Halloween".
All Saints' Day is described as All Hallows or Hallowmas.
The origin of Halloween was the event called Samhain festival to enshrine the spirits at night always held on 31st October.
After Christisnity had spread, Samhain festival was held the day before 1st November, which is All Saints' Day in Christianity, so Halloween has been known as the festival of 31st October.
Now the purpose of Halloween is to perform a party or event with fancy dresses. But it is considered that European people has changed the original Halloween after they moved out to U.S. and it has been imported and spread not only in Europe but also around the world.
It would be more interesting to know the name and the meaning of the events.
