カボチャランタンの始まり
今でこそハロウィーンの季節になると店頭や街中で当たり前の様に見られるのが、顔の模様が彫られたオンレジや黄色の大きなカボチャです。
しかし、ハロウィーンとカボチャがセットで扱われるようになったのは、アメリカが始まりなのです。
それまでハロウィーンで用いられるランタンにはカブが使われていました。
しかし、ヨーロッパの人々がアメリカに渡って独自の文化が築かれる様になった際に持ち込まれた野菜の中で、数種類のカボチャがアメリカの土地に適した作物だったので、今ではカボチャはアメリカを代表する野菜の一つになりました。
そのカボチャの中でも、特に色合いが良いオレンジや黄色のカボチャはハロウィーンの際に作られるランタンに最適の材料でした。
そうしても作られたカボチャランタンがアメリカからヨーロッパに渡り、カブより扱いやすくて見栄えの良い事からヨーロッパでもカボチャランタンが親しまれるようになりました。
それがヨーロッパだけでなく世界に広まって、現在ではハロウィーンの時に家の装飾やランタン専用のカボチャが栽培されるまでなりました。
ですが、そんな風に装飾用に作られるカボチャの大半は、大きさや形を重視する事が多くて食用に向かない事が多いです。
日本でも偶に見栄えの良いアメリカ産のオレンジや黄色のカボチャが売られている事がありますが、買う前は必ず店の人に「食用ですか？」と尋ねる事をオススメします。
特にハロウィーンが近い時は絶対に聞いた方が良いでしょう。

The Origin of a Pumpkin Lantern
Nowadays orange or yellow big pumpkins that are carved with the pattern of the face can be seen in the shop or the city in the Halloween season.
However, Halloween and the pumpkin have been originally treated as a set in the U.S.
Until then, a turnip used to be used for the lantern in Halloween.
However, when European people moved to the U.S. and has made its own culture, several kinds of pumpkins were suitable for the land in the U.S. and now a pumpkin became one of the representative vegetable among the vegetables that they brought to the U.S.
Among pumpkins, especially orange and yellow pumpkins having good color were the most suitable for the lantern to be made at the time of Halloween.
Then the pumpkin lantern was introduced from the U.S. to Europe and it became popular in Europe as it is easier to handle than a turnip and good-looking.
It has spread not only over Europe but also throughout the world, and now pumpkins specialized only for home decoration and a lantern at the time of Halloween are cultivated.
But, most pumpkins made for decoration are not edible as the size and the shape are emphasized.
Although good looking pumpkins and oranges made in the U.S. are sometimes sold in Japan, it is recommended to ask a salesman whether it is edible or not before you purchase it.
Especially you definitely should ask about it around the Halloween season.
